Dried Orange Slices: Uses for Drinks, Décor and Holiday Garlands

Dried orange slices are one of the most versatile things you can keep in your kitchen. They float beautifully in drinks, garnish desserts, scent a room in a simmer pot and turn into garlands and ornaments for the festive season. This guide covers what dried orange slices are, whether you can eat them, the most popular ways to use them, and two easy DIYs to try at home.

What Are Dried Orange Slices?

Dried orange slices are thin rounds of whole orange, peel and all, with the water removed at a low temperature. Drying keeps the bright colour and the classic cartwheel pattern, concentrates the citrus aroma, and makes them shelf-stable for months. Our dried orange slices are dehydrated with nothing added: no sugar, no preservatives and no oil.

Can You Eat Dried Orange Slices?

Yes, food-grade dried orange slices are edible, peel included. The flesh tastes tangy and lightly sweet, while the peel is more bitter and aromatic, so many people enjoy them as a chewy or crisp snack, or soften them in a drink first. Only eat slices sold as food-grade. Orange slices made purely for décor are sometimes sprayed, varnished or treated, and aren't meant to be eaten.

Ways to Use Dried Orange Slices

In Drinks and Infused Water

Drop a slice or two into hot water, herbal infusions or sparkling water for a gentle citrus flavour. They hold their shape in liquid, so they look as good in the glass as they taste. They pair well with hibiscus, cinnamon and mint.

As a Mocktail and Cocktail Garnish

A dried orange wheel on the rim or floating on top is one of the easiest ways to make a drink look café-ready. Unlike fresh slices, they don't go soggy or need to be cut at the last minute, which is why bartenders and cafés keep them on hand.

On Desserts and Bakes

Use whole slices to decorate cakes, cheesecakes, tarts and chocolate bark. They add colour and a citrus note, and they keep their shape far better than fresh fruit.

In Holiday and Festive Décor

Dried orange slices are a favourite for natural décor: garlands, wreaths, Christmas tree ornaments, Diwali and festive table settings, and gift toppers tied with twine. When the light shines through them, the segments glow like little stained-glass windows.

In Simmer Pots and Potpourri

Simmered with spices, dried orange fills the room with a warm, natural fragrance. They're also a classic potpourri ingredient alongside rose petals, cinnamon and cloves.

How to Make a Dried Orange Garland

You'll need

  • 15–20 dried orange slices
  • Jute twine or cotton string (about 1.5–2 metres)
  • A large blunt needle
  • Optional: cinnamon sticks, bay leaves or wooden beads

Method

  1. Thread the twine onto the needle and knot the far end.
  2. Push the needle through each slice, just inside the rind, so the slices hang flat.
  3. Space the slices 5–8 cm apart, adding cinnamon sticks or beads between them if you like.
  4. Leave extra twine at both ends for hanging, and knot to finish.
  5. Hang away from direct heat, steam and moisture so the slices stay crisp.

How to Make a Citrus Simmer Pot

Ingredients

  • 4–5 dried orange slices
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1–2 star anise (optional)
  • 4–5 cups water

Method

  1. Add everything to a small pot.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer, then turn the heat to low.
  3. Top up with water every 30–45 minutes so the pot never runs dry.
  4. Never leave it unattended, and turn it off when you leave the room.

A simmer pot is for fragrance only, so don't drink the liquid.

Dried Orange Slices vs Fresh Orange

Feature Dried Orange Slices Fresh Orange
Shelf life Months, stored airtight About 1–2 weeks
Prep needed None, ready to use Washing and cutting
In drinks Holds its shape, infuses slowly Releases juice quickly, can go soggy
Best for Garnish, infusions, décor, gifting Juicing, eating fresh, cooking

How to Store Dried Orange Slices

Keep them in an airtight container or the resealable pouch, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Moisture is the main enemy as slices that absorb humidity turn soft and sticky. If they lose some crispness, a few minutes in a warm, switched-off oven usually brings them back.
